With Fox ruling ratings roost, CNN looks ahead

What’s the No. 1 brand in cable news? That depends, in part, on how many screens you’re counting.
With the second-quarter drawing to a close, Fox News Channel is running up the score on the competition, posting its highest ratings ever and boasting of an evening audience equal to those of CNN, MSNBC and Headline News combined.
But that’s only looking at TV. And that’s something CNN — which had its best second quarter since 2003 in total viewers, but fell to third place in primetime in the crucial 25-to-54 demographic — says it’s not doing anymore now that so much news is being consumed on computers and mobile devices.
“We used to be a television business,” says Jack Wakshlag, head of research for Turner Broadcasting. “We see our future in terms of being a multi-platform media company. Now we need a metric that will measure our power or our presence across the different platforms.”
As it happens, Nielsen, the ratings firm, recently started tracking such a metric. It’s called Nielsen Fusion, and it combines viewership and online usage data. The Fusion rankings for April show CNN with a commanding lead over both MSNBC and Fox News when it comes to reach among all viewers. (That’s looking at the full day, not just primetime.) CNN (which is part of the same media conglomerate as Daily Finance parent AOL) reached 125.3 million people in April, versus 105.5 milllion for MSNBC and 104.3 million for Fox.
That’s not really a surprise. CNN has always beaten Fox and MSNBC in reach, or cumulative audience. (Fox and MSNBC counter that advertisers make their buys based on ratings, not cumulative reach, which doesn’t reflect duration of viewership.) And CNN and MSNBC both have a big head start on Fox when it comes to web traffic; the Fox News Digital Network attracts fewer than half the unique visitors of the MSNBC or CNN digital networks (No. 1 and 3 among all news sites, respectively).
But as viewers increasingly migrate their news consumption from televisions to other types of screens, total cross-platform viewership is only going to get more important, says Wakshlag. He notes that 20 million viewers get news from both CNN television and a CNN website in the same month, versus only 9 million who do the same with Fox. “For some reason, they don’t have a lot of what we’re calling ‘integrators,’ and we’re seeing that as something that really says something about the strength of the brand,” he says.

From the article:
Let me suggest that by sheer numbers alone, this means that O’Reilly, Hannity, and Beck, while they are thought of as political figures by liberals, and, indeed, who all seem to become ever more belligerent in their anti-Obama positions, are actually thought of as light entertainment by their audiences.
Who else goes to Fox for a chuckle, nothing more?

Why else would I go there ? Its always good for a laugh.
I sure do!!…I love all the stupidity that FOX points out on the democrats! Gives me a BIG chuckle every day! Thanks for asking!!!
What does the body of your question have to do with the title?
Might I say, that as an independent against BOTH Republicans and Democrats, I find Fox News more moderate and unbiased (in comparison) than MSNBC. CNN seems to be pretty moderate as well, at least nowadays.
I just don’t buy into the leftist propaganda that MSNBC puts forth, which is reflected by this question.
Yeah well if you can’t compete leave. Bravo for CNN.
I go there for a good laugh… the rest of cable news source makes me cringe and cry for America.
Actually, I go to MSNBC for one. FOX News has at least two opinions, while MSNBC & CNN are in the back pocket of the Obama Administration. Since they like to create this FACADE about Mr Obama, they realize that this fake reality will only last if the Liberal Media helps prolong it!!
Thank you for making Fox News #1
I go to their website and count how many spelling errors.
Well,
Nielsen can always manipulate how data is being collected in such a way that outcome would always favor their view point….
I watch CNN, MSNBC & FOX, and they are ALL FULL of Crap.

I am overwhelmed by your loyalty to the Cable News Network. I am also astounded by your lack of research, baseless facts, etc. I have no idea what kind of ratings are actually turned out by these networks but I am certain you don’t either. This appears to be just a ploy to get your liberal plug in for your favorite news network. If CNN is as healthy as you say it will be interesting to see which network bites the dust first, Fox or CNN.
if I want a chuckle I go to MSNBC and watch Olberman
Laugh all you want. Fox cleans up in the ratings because people are sick of the Liberal media.
Ditto Air America. The abysmal radio station gets creamed by Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck..etc., for the same reasons. People are sick of Liberal media.
Since the much hyped conversation to digital signals I no longer get the channel Fox is on. Nor do I get many other English speaking channels which I once had. I get “weak signal” messages instead. I get Spanish and Korean languages instead. Tell Oprah she is out of my life now.
You, and perhaps people that have lot’s of free time on their hands. O’Reilly, Hannity and Beck should not be thought of as political figures. Anyone with half a brain knows that they are entertainers. Do you hear conservatives saying that Maddow and Olberman are political figures? Goodness, no. Fox does not have liberal bias. MSNBC is terribly tainted by the liberal media. CNN has a liberal slant but isn’t nearly as bad as msNBC. I almost didn’t even answer this question as it is surely going to be reported by someone on violation of a rant.
I do,I laugh at the way they are spanking the Liberals channels ratings… Sorry CNN is not ahead of them, koolaid is strong for you today.
The one and only reason!
You know, its really sad that you actually believe that crap.
I used to.
I used to but I know what they do & don’t need to go there anymore. I really wish dems would boycott them. By going there we are like a teenager who experiments with dangerous drugs cause we can’t be addicted. No addict every said they were going to get caught in an addiction. They seriously use hypotics methods to pull people in & keep them. I have a DVR so before the election I just used a word..the DVR will pick up on the word & record all shows with that word in the title…I picked OBAMA so one I decided to watch whatever had been recorded. I had no idea at first where the show came from but a bio of Obama was on there for me to watch. It was great. It even explained the community service work he did in a way that helped me admire him even more. This hour show was great but the last 10 minutes something shifting. It made me feel so bad about him that I actually woke up feeling terrorized. Like I was mentally ill. I have been through some stuff & done a lot of healing work on myself so I don’t go through this kind of stuff anymore but I did years ago…it was so horrible I was so afraid of him. Well, I found out the show was presented by Fox. I went from being angry at people who fall for the crazy stuff on there to totally understanding these people. We really need to be careful what we let into our mind. So no I don’t watch Fox & No I don’t find them funny anyway. They talk about the left wing in a way you would never hear CNN talk. They are hyper & immature & I really work to be peaceful & kindof mature. It is not work when you can turn on CNN & see even Republicans like David Gergan who are healthy people. We must put our focus on what we want in life not what we don’t want. I don’t anything Fox has. If I want to laugh I will watch a liberal comedian there are many good ones.EDIT: besides I can get a chuckle anywhere. Look at Dan’s answer. He seriously thinks Chuck Norris would make a good President.
